    hey there amazing forum...
    can anyone explain me step by step how to install xampp on ubuntu..have been searching for tuts online but i have been having some difficulties....
    i have already downloaded a working version of xampp, i followed the procedures of some tutorials on how to extract the file to the opt directory in ubuntu, but i have been getting an error that i dont have the necessary permissions, something about root can only do it..but there is only one account and its mine, also i'm the administrator...please help me, i've just switched from the windows to linux, and i really want to be able to work on ubuntu...i'm also working on a php intranet project for my final year, so it would be great if anyone can suggest me a good book on css!

    Hello,

    Why do you want to install XAMPP ? On Windows maybe it is the best solution for a local web server; but on Ubuntu, it's better to install what Ubuntu already provides. Then modify some parameters in the config files and you are set (well it will work without the modification, but you'll probably want to move your document root to your home folder)

    well actually i'm somewhat new to the linux operating system, and no one in my 'entourage' actually know how to work on this OS and there are some technical terms that i'm not quite getting.
    i'm studying at school of IT ebene, a branche of MITD, well even the teachers there don't know much about the linux system, lol, thats why i wanted to use XAMPP, for compatibility with the Windows OS installed on my school machines. But if you think it will be compatible anyway with the Ubuntu solution, well then there is no problem....
