Linux grub disappears with windows7
  • Hi guys. Need some help. I had partitioned my hard disk to run ubuntu on one partition and windows on the other. I've installed ubuntu 10.04 and it run perfectly. Next, I installed Windows7 on the other partition and on rebooting, no more ubuntu! I get only the Windows7 loader. What should I do?
  • You should install grub again... and this is easier said than done as your Ubuntu does not boot.

There are two ways to solve the issue:

    (1) either boot with a live DVD, mount the Ubuntu partitions and run grub-install again or
    (2) (much easier) install Ubuntu again -- this will install grub.

Next time, never ever install Windows after installing Linux. Always install Linux last :-)
  • @ Cedric..been years swapping between CentOS Linux and Windows...by default as Avinash said ... create a partition for Windows and leave unpartitioned for linux..first install the Windows on partitioned and when installing the Linux at second instance..partitoning will be practically done..works fine for me ;)
  • Thanks guys. Works great!
